ABSTRACT
Hardness, stiffness, and toughness represent the resistance of solid materials to plastic and elastic deformations and crack propagation, respectively. They are important in processes such as comminution, tableting, polishing, abrasive and erosive wear, and attrition, as they defi ne the mode and pattern of mechanical failure. Their characterization is highly desirable for product and process improvement and optimization.
