ABSTRACT
The Smart Grid sector made and continues to make significant investments in machine-to-machine (M2M) communications and applications that rely on sensors to collect data from connected devices. Smart Grid technologies create greater volumes of data and new sources of data—almost exclusively structured data since it is obtained from devices like smart meters or other sensored machines and components. But the electricity sector is not the only sector to confront challenges and opportunities with this new data. The Internet of Things includes the Smart Grid plus a growing array of M2M applications that leverage sophisticated sensors. There are important privacy questions regarding the treatment of all these new sources of data, but there are also very serious questions about the monetary value of data. Monetization of the data can create privacy issues. Vehicle telematics serves as an interesting example of how new data is monetized and can be used for shared benefit or not.
