ABSTRACT

This chapter has two aims. The rst is to raise an issue that underpins complex structure and function at all length scales and that is especially relevant to the origin and development of life. The second is to articulate potential pitfalls of projects such as this one in the context of the special physical features of water that this and other contributions to this volume are tackling. These dangers are, I think, the cause of an uneasiness that rises quite generally in the background of discussions about special structure, optimization, and design.
