ABSTRACT
To study coding in a sensory system, an electrophysiologist typically records the activity of neurons while presenting stimuli assumed to be relevant to neural coding, ideally when the animal is awake. The neural responses, which may include tonic or phasic firing rate changes, or changes in correlations between neurons, are used to refute or support the proposed neural coding scheme.
