As the first neuronal component in the olfactory system, olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) are responsible for detecting and discriminating among thousands of odors and sending the information directly to the olfactory bulb in the brain. Considerable efforts have been made to develop preparations from which odor-induced responses and membrane properties of ORNs can be studied by different physiological approaches.
