ABSTRACT

The scope of a project refers to the sum of all the work that must be performed in the project. Work within the scope of the project is work that will be performed, and work outside the scope is work that will not be performed. For example, there is a project to develop a new software application for a customer organization. A legitimate question concerns whether training the employees how to use the software is part of the project’s scope. The project manager would be responsible to develop and conduct training to end users if it was previously decided that training is within the project’s scope. Determining a project’s scope, i.e., its final deliverables, is done as part of the project business case definition process during the initiation phase.
