ABSTRACT

Light is a complex environmental cue that varies in intensity and quality both daily and seasonally. In addition to the predictable daily changes tracked from dawn to dusk, plants must also cope with the unpredictable changes that can occur in an instant (as seen in sun flecks, cloud cover, etc.) or that may persist for longer durations (due to events such as weather patterns, windthrow, or deforestation). Fluctuations in light intensity and quality have clear consequences on biochemical, physiological, and developmental processes in plants. If the light level is too low, there is insufficient energy to maintain growth and development. If it becomes too high, the system can overload resulting in photodamage.
