ABSTRACT
Remarkable improvements in water quality occurred in many streams and rivers following implementation of the Clean Water Act in the 1970s. Three decades later, nonpoint source pollution is the central challenge to those concerned with protecting and restoring water quality. Land use effects on the water balance, soil erosion and sediment transport, nutrient cycling, and pollutant transport are a primary cause of water quality degradation.
