ABSTRACT

The past few years have seen remarkable progress in the field of DNA sequencing. Some of the landmark achievements are the sequencing of several key experimental organisms including a yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) [16], the multicellular organism Caenorhabditis elegans [44], the plant Arabidopsis thaliana [15], the fruitfly Drosophila melanogaster [1, 32] and the completion of the draft sequence of the human genome [52, 27]. At present, the complete genome sequences of over 200 species (mostly bacteria) are available in the Genomes section of GenBank.
