The development of methods for assessing, mapping, and monitoring salt-affected soils by use of optical remote sensing data in combination with field measurements has been the objective of numerous studies during the last three decades. The approaches used range from simple visual interpretation of hardcopy satellite imagery (Verma et al., 1994), to digital analysis of broadband remote sensing data (Metternicht and Zinck, 1996; Rao et al., 1998), to quantitative analysis of hyperspectral imagery (Ben-Dor, 2002; Dehaan and Taylor, 2002), and integrated modeling (Farifteh, 2007). A review is given in Metternicht and Zinck (2003) and Farifteh et al. (2006).
