ABSTRACT

We consider in this chapter a different approach to urns. So far we have looked at purely probabilistic methods. The subject can be approached from a combinatorial angle with analytic tools such as formal generating functions. The methods are innovative and have only been considered very recently. The main method is enumerative, in the sense of finding the number of all possible (equally likely) histories and the proportion therein that satisfies a certain criterion, such as the number of white balls being a prespecified number.
