Imaging Tissue Oxygenation Status with MRI
Reduced oxygenation or hypoxia is a signiœcant factor in tumor progression and treatment. In particular, the hypoxic environment in tumors is known to (a) promote angiogenesis, (b) promote malignancy, (c) promote metastases, (d) promote genetic instability, and (e) reduce the e›ectiveness of radiation-and chemo therapy. Additionally, hypoxia is associated with poor prognosis for patients su›ering from several cancers, including that of the head and neck, brain, cervix, and prostate. Hence, it is important to understand the role of hypoxia in tumor growth, progression, and treatment.
