ABSTRACT

Introduction An architect designing his first multi-use hall once remarked to me in exasperation, “Acousticians have an opinion about every material, surface, and construction in the hall. Is there anything that you don’t weigh-in on?” I explained that all materials in a multi-use hall are acoustical in nature, from the fabric on the seats to the pile height of the carpet. In fact, acousticians have a recommendation on everything but the color. I quipped, “You can choose that; just don’t choose blue.” It is attention to detail that takes a good hall and makes it excellent.
