ABSTRACT

Ergonomics aims to increase the “comfort” of the individual. This is an obvious statement, almost banal, conrmed, however, also by the main “ofcial” denitions of the discipline itself. This makes wide reference to human well-being: sometimes in general reference to the design process, which must be based on psychological and physical needs of the individual [as reported in the International Ergonomics Association (IEA) website/homepage (www.iea.cc)]; and sometimes to emphasize the need to achieve a desired “optimization” between the well-being of individuals and the overall “performance” of the system that they use (IEA Council 2000).
