The Code of Ethics for the National Society of Professional Engineers, USA, states that engineers in the fulllment of their professional duties shall (The National Society of Professional Engineers 2010)

1. Hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public 2. Perform services only in areas of their competence 3. Issue public statements only in an objective and truthful manner 4. Act for each employer or client as faithful agents or trustees 5. Avoid deceptive acts 6. Conduct themselves honorably, responsibly, ethically, and lawfully so as to enhance the

honor, reputation, and usefulness of the profession

The engineering accreditation agency, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), regards engineering ethics as an important component of engineering education. ABET’s Criterion 3(f) states that “an Engineering Program must demonstrate that their students attain an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility” (The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. 2010). Thus, engineering ethics has become a required component of engineering education at institutions of higher education.
