ABSTRACT
There are many examples of well-conceived information and communication systems that can deliver considerable benefit in healthcare. The history of health informatics is also littered with examples of information and communication systems that were ill-considered in design, in purpose or in the resources needed to build and run. Just because something is possible does not mean that it is either desirable or practicable (Coiera, 1995).
