ABSTRACT

Bubbles and drops are ubiquitous in nature and play critical rolesinmanyimportantenvironmentalprocesses.Mostfamiliar is the life-sustaining role of rain. Less familiar are their roles inthethermalbudgetoftheatmosphere,chemicalandbiologicaldispersion,volcanoesandexplodinglakes,anddiseasetransmission.›egoalofthisreviewistwofold.First,wereviewthe fundamentalphysicsofdropletsandbubbles,therebyproviding aframeworkforunderstandingtheirmyriadrolesinžuidtransportandthesustenanceoflifewithintheaqueousandaerial environments.Second,wereviewthemanyenvironmentalsettingsinwhichtheyarise,briežyreviewingwell-studiedproblems while highlighting exciting new research directions.
