ABSTRACT

One approach to ensuring quality is to set standards for individuals to practice and to ensure continued professional development. is is based on an assumption that the source of quality is the individual practitioner. As services have become more teambased and complex, this approach has proved insucient, but is still necessary. Perhaps the weakest part of this approach is in detecting and taking action against practitioners who provide poor quality services or act in unsafe ways. Services need eective systems for performance appraisal, personnel development, and for raising and resolving issues concerning an individual’s performance.
