ABSTRACT

Lean inking is a management model that started in the manufacturing industry. In their book, The Machine That Changed the World, Womack, Jones, and Roos (1990) chronicled how Japanese automobile companies, particularly the Toyota Motor Corporation, were able to build better cars with less time and resources. Building on the classic quality improvement method of the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle, numerous manufacturing companies have incorporated the concepts of Lean inking to improve their quality and productivity. ose who have successfully implemented Lean inking not only as a means to improve eciency, but as a corporate philosophy, have become

industry leaders. e success of Lean inking in the manufacturing industry has led to its adoption by organizations in the service sector, including those in healthcare (IHI 2005).
