ABSTRACT

While many quality indicators within radiation oncology are quite visible, departmental success is oen based less on technical performance indicators than on the quality of leadership. Yet investment in the development of leaders in medicine, and especially in radiology, appears to remain an underrated priority (Gunderman 2004). Although a denite imperative may exist to improve quality and eciency, executing this through eective management remains a challenge because of the lack of leadership training. Similar to the circumstances in many clinical areas (Guthrie 1999), in many radiology and radiation oncology departments, an individual’s expertise as a radiologist or radiation oncologist is greatly out of proportion to his or her expertise as a leader (Gunderman 2004).
