ABSTRACT

R esponders to a radiation emergency include a wide spectrum of professionals, such as law enforcement, re ghters, emergency medical services, hazardous material (HazMat) teams, hospital sta caring for victims as they arrive, public health and emergency management professionals, public information ocers, radiation professionals trained speci cally to deal with such emergencies, and many others. In a broader context, professionals working in vital service industries who report back to work, when it is safe to do so, are also “responding” to the emergency. ese individuals include, for example, hotel managers and sta who host displaced populations in their facilities hundreds of miles away or bank employees going back when it is safe and reopening vital nancial establishments in the aected community. ese workers are all responding to the emergency and their response is critical to collective recovery from a catastrophic radiation emergency.
