ABSTRACT

Advances in treatment planning and delivery technology over the past several decades have enabled substantial gains in the available precision of radiotherapy delivery. Higher precision has enabled clinicians to reduce the volume of incidentally irradiated healthy tissue while still achieving proper dose to the target. However, high precision requires an attendant increase in accuracy to prevent missing the target. Sophisticated, integrated systems are now capable of imaging the patient and guiding the treatment beam to the target in a matter of minutes to within an error of a few millimeters and delivering a known dose to this target within an error of a few percent of the prescribed dose.
