ABSTRACT

That light beams carry a momentum in addition to their energy is firmly described by Maxwell’s equations. Whereas linear momentum has been understood since the original formulation of Maxwell’s equations, what was only much later definitively ascertained is that Maxwell’s formulation also describes an angular momentum associated with light. This angular momentum was first mathematically described by Allen et al. in 1992 and has since found applications not just using light but with all wave phenomena.
