ABSTRACT

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. According to the statistics provided by the Skin Cancer Foundation of the United States, more than 3.5 million cases are diagnosed annually. Each year, there are more new cases of skin cancer than the total combination of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung, and colon. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sun exposure is the primary cause of skin cancer. Other factors that play a role include smoking, HPV infections, some genetic syndromes, and chronic nonhealing wounds (Saladi and Persaud 2005).
