ABSTRACT

Nuclear nonproliferation is primarily concerned with the spread of nuclear weapons technology to states and groups that should not acquire such technology. A secondary focus, albeit a political one, is the reduction or elimination of nuclear weapons. Lastly, nuclear security encompasses issues related to materials protection, inventory accountability, and the thwarting of clandestine nuclear activity. An overview of the interdisciplinary overlap of these three areas is shown in Figure 17.1.
