ABSTRACT

Based on Eq. ( 4.1 ), melting points are proportional to t::,.H1 , and consequently whatever reduces one reduces the other. It turns out, as discussed below, that increasing the covalent character of a bond tends to reduce t::,.H1 by stabilizing discrete units in the melt, which in turn reduces the number of bonds that have to be broken during melting, which is ultimately reflected in lower melting points.
