ABSTRACT

OVERVIEW This chapter addresses four key questions pertaining to the relationship between the analysis of activity and work domain analysis: whether activity can be included in a work domain model; whether nouns or verbs should be used for representing constraints in this type of model; whether control systems may be incorporated into a work domain model; and whether there is an overlap between work domain analysis and control task analysis, the second dimension of cognitive work analysis, which focuses on the modeling of activity. These matters, which were not resolved in earlier texts, are important to settle because they have implications for the scope and accuracy of a work domain model. This, in turn, can affect how well designs based on the model support workers in adapting to the demands of a broad range of situations, including those that are unforeseen.
