ABSTRACT

OVERVIEW Cognitive work analysis is a framework for the analysis, design, and evaluation of work in complex sociotechnical systems. In this chapter, the five dimensions of this framework-work domain analysis, control task analysis, strategies analysis, social organization and cooperation analysis, and worker competencies analysis-are introduced. The significance attached to the ordering of these dimensions is also revealed. A case is made that this framework for work analysis is unique because of its formative quality. Moreover, it is explained that this framework is essential for developing highly effective systems as it promotes designing for adaptation. This overview of cognitive work analysis provides sufficient context for the following chapters on work domain analysis, the first dimension of this framework. A more detailed discussion of the other dimensions may be found in the Appendix.
