To capture the flow characteristics responsi­ ble for momentum transfer one needs to resolve the flow to the smallest characteristic size (i.e., Kolmogorov scale), typically in the order of magnitude of micrometers for most laboratory flows. This poses a major problem for the model of full scale combustion chambers in a way that

is efficient enough to be achievable for computa­ tions on a reasonable number of computers in a reasonable amount of time.
