ABSTRACT
Lichens are associations of two or more components consisting of a typically dominant fungal partner, the mycobiont, in close association with a primitive photosynthetic organism, the photobiont, which is either a green alga or a cianobacteria. Lichenization is a common and successful nutritional strategy adopted over a long evolutionary history; more than 20% of fungal species being lichenized.
