ABSTRACT

Two basic approaches to digital painting and drawing are used in computer graphics. The first simulates the characteristics of an artistic medium such as canvas and paint, and is covered in Chapter 3. The second attempts to create drawings or paintings automatically by simulating the artistic process. Researchers who attempt to simulate the artistic process can also be divided into two groups: those who simulate paintings, and those who simulate painting techniques using standard computer-graphics rendering. In this chapter, we cover four systems for automatically generating digital paintings from source images. In addition, we include a section on artistic halftoning methods. We feel that halftoning and painting systems are similar because they are both describe methods for distributing marks on the image plane to convey information.
