ABSTRACT

Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) has been utilized in several industrial applications where speed, cost, and specicity of IMS are viewed as strong advantages, particularly in process monitoring. In some instances, the low cost of IMS analyzers and high value added from the convenience of continuous measurement are enough that analyzers are integrated into a component, such as a high-voltage switch in hydroelectric power plants. In other instances, low limits of detection with atmospheric pressure ionization of IMS analyzers have made possible a specic use, such as monitoring air quality in manufacturing rooms where purity is extraordinarily critical. Monitoring industrial emissions, although possibly a category of environmental application, is another example where process-monitoring congurations of IMS instruments were employed for industrial benet.
