ABSTRACT

Psychiatric disorders are common and often come with a significant disease burden. Prescription medications for psychiatric disorders are not curative, and adherence to long-term regimens tends to be low. Tolerability is a leading cause of non-adherence and may encourage patients, their families, and caregivers to consider complementary and alternative approaches to treat their disorder and symptoms.

This chapter focuses on a number of botanicals that have been used for the treatment of psychiatric disorders focusing on anxiety disorders, depression, insomnia, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Dosing and preparations of each botanical are reviewed along with safety information including potential concerns with concomitant disease states and drug interactions. An overview of the available evidence including any comparison data to existing treatments with a focus on clinical applicability is also reviewed.
