ABSTRACT

Musculoskeletal disorders especially osteoarthritis have become increasingly common worldwide in part due to aging and the obesity epidemic. These disorders negatively impact many individual's mobility and daily functioning, and ultimately their quality of life. Although many prescription medications are available for musculoskeletal conditions, they often possess clinically significant adverse effects, especially among older adults that may lead to unnecessary hospitalizations and death. This chapter discusses the use of botanicals for osteoarthritis, osteopenia, gout, and fibromyalgia. Many botanicals including Boswellia serrata, cat's claw extract, devil's claw, ginger, turmeric, and cherry products may reduce pain and inflammation and improve functional status. An overview of the available evidence is provided, including any comparison data to existing treatments with a focus on clinical applicability.
