ABSTRACT
The Chicago White Sox were recognised as the strongest baseball team in the 1919 World Series in the United States. However, despite a spectacularly successful season, the team’s owner, Charles Comiskey, refused to reward his players. The predetermination of results can be grouped into various categories. They are usually distinguished according to the following criteria: the area in which they take place: sports-fixing and fixing related to sporting practice, and according to the way in which the implicated individuals establish a collaboration: bribery and extortion. Sports organisations are characterised by the advantage of a group culture, whereby the members are discouraged from publicly exposing moral or legal infringements that could take place within the group. This is known as omerta. This phenomenon is used in order to explain the passive nature of the communication relating to infringements within an organisation.
