ABSTRACT

[367/I] As soon as the Maumetan feasts were over, Father Joseph de Crasto informed Prince Assofo Kan 1 of my arrival. As it was already late he said he would send for me next day. When the Father gave me this good news that evening, as being good augury for the liberation of Father Antonio de Christo, we discussed the best way of presenting ourselves before that Nobleman. We agreed that as he must already know that I was a Brother it would be best for me to appear wearing my proper habit, as he would then respect me more and treat [367/2] me less officially, which would assist the business I had in view. In order to carry this out we had to arrange with the eunuch who was Father Joseph's friend, and belonged to the Prince's household, that he should admit me to his house, where I could put on my robes. For it is a custom among Mogol Princes and Nobles, whenever they first entertain any one of position, especially a foreigner, to send a body of horsemen to conduct him to their presence. It was, therefore, incumbent on me, in order not to cause surprise, that I should accompany them in the Mogol dress I was wearing, [368/1] as I should be obliged to pass right through the City.
