ABSTRACT

[383/1] As soon as lovely Aurora 2 arrived, driving away the stars of night, and the crested Cock saluted the approaching day with his morning song, warning the industrious labourer of the hour for returning to work, our nautical but somnolent crew awoke. Some thereupon started to weigh the anchors and others to open up the instruments of navigation, and we started off to the swish of favourable currents and so journeyed on, with but little effort on the part of the rowers, in sight of populous and well-cultivated banks. From time to time we landed either to take necessary rest or attend, as was required, at the customs-posts. Here, on presenting the formon we carried, they not only let us pass with the utmost speed, although other vessels had arrived before us, but only levied such dues as the factors named.
