ABSTRACT

Schooling is precisely one area where anarcho-capitalists and anarchists might engage in dialogue about desirable practices that might be agreed in spite of philosophical differences. For all anarchists the abolition of the State would mean that much of what the State does has to be undertaken directly by the community. Some theorists venerate the State as the apotheosis of society; others regard it as an amiable, though often inefficient, organisation for the achievement of social ends; but almost all regard it as a necessary means for achieving the goals of mankind. By 1830 there was a concerted effort by reformers to gain control over the state boards of education – for schooling to this day is controlled at state, not federal, level and most teachers are civil servants – school superintendents and teacher training institutions. The David Friedmans therefore started with a form of home schooling – ‘no classes, just books, conversation, unlimited internet access’.
