ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 explores the concept of positionality. In defining positionality, we primarily draw from Gloria Anzaldua, bell hooks, and Amalia Mesa-Bains, who theorize positionality from multiply marginalized perspectives. Doing so commits the reader (and the field) to consistent contemplation about how positionality challenges and enables coalitions and change. Using extended examples to illustrate this concept, we make clear some of the ways technical communicators can operationalize our understanding of positionality in the field’s research, pedagogy, and practice.
