ABSTRACT

This chapter explores Mixed Method Research (MMR). First, we consider the broader research context and underpinning epistemological (philosophy of knowledge), ontological (philosophy of reality), axiological (role of values) and methodological (practice used to gain knowledge) assumptions that guide research. Following this, we critique MMR and offer a rationale for its use within outdoor research. In particular, we draw upon existing frameworks to identify reasons for combining quantitative and qualitative research findings and overview major MMR designs. To conclude, an applied example of MMR highlights how quantitative and qualitative research approaches can be combined.
