ABSTRACT
The first photograph of the earth viewed from space was flashed around the world by the international wire services in the early 1960s. This was a defining moment in our collective environmental consciousness. The now familiar picture of a green, blue, and brown globe, wrapped in swirling white clouds, suspended in black space, started a revolution. For the first time, people around the world seemed to grasp, emotionally and intellectually, how finite and alone we are in the universe. Our seemingly vast world was reduced to a very small sphere, a warm and comfortable planet in a cold blackness, but fragile and very much confined.
