ABSTRACT

This chapter describes Phase II of the strength-based cognitive behaviour therapy (SBCBT) recovery process, which involves need identification. Identifying needs is the first step towards setting goals for the client's recovery. The process helps the client to clarify what he/she wants to achieve and how he/she can go about doing this. It is of paramount importance for the client to be fully aware of and own the process when identifying his/her needs. After all, recovery is a personal journey that is directed by the client him/herself. In the case example that follows, we illustrate in detail how the Life Priorities Game and the Dysfunctional Cycle technique can be used to help the client to identify his/her needs.
