ABSTRACT

In Phase V, the worker assists the client in setting concrete and feasible tasks or action plans to achieve the goals set in Phase IV. A step-by-step approach should be used where long-term goals should be broken down into smaller ones and interim tasks or strategies should be set to facilitate the attainment of the desired outcomes. The Life Goal Formulation Chart in Chapter 5 has captured this goal formulation and planning process. This chapter will introduce how the stated goals can be implemented in the mental health recovery process. An important message that needs to be brought forward here is that, such implementation should be one involving providing our clients with new and successful experiences that promote confidence and commitment to achieving a meaningful life in the mental health recovery process. The worker should not be too pushy nor facilitate the client to set too difficult a task for him/herself because the principle is to build up a sense of competence and to minimize the chance of negative or failed experience. Two cases will be used below to illustrate the application of two strategies: Creating New Experiences and the Behavioural Experiment technique.
