ABSTRACT

During the recovery process, the recovering person is bound to face obstacles that impede his/her goal attainment. These obstacles can come from internal and external sources. Internally, the client's lack of awareness of his/her own strengths, dysfunctional patterns of response, and rigid beliefs and assumptions can affect his/her understanding of and confidence in achieving his/her goals. Externally, the limitations present in the environment (e.g., availability of resources and lack of willingness of the system to change and be more responsive to the needs of the client) can also affect whether and how much the client can achieve his/her goals. In this chapter, we describe how the worker can help the client to identify and develop strategies to deal with the internal factors that pose difficulties and barriers in completing a task or implementing a strategy. We use the case of Mrs. Ko to illustrate how to use the 5-Strategies and Costs and Benefits Analysis to facilitate clients to overcome barriers in achieving their recovery goals.
