ABSTRACT

Vico revised the New Science twice. The first revision, published in 1730, was substantial; the final revision, published posthumously in 1744, contains some minor revisions to the previous version and one significant omission, about which more later. Vico’s subtitle to the revised edition indicates a change in focus. Natural law is omitted from the title which now reads Principles of a New Science of Giambattista Vico about the Common Nature of the Nations. 1 Vico turns his attention to what the origins of human societies share, and from this shared origin he theorizes an account of human development that includes the linguistic and cultural bases of natural law.
