ABSTRACT

Segmented teams may be designed from the outset, with the engagement of a co-supervisor for a specific purpose, or become a default mode when problems arise in collaborative teams. Different power dynamics are largely removed or backgrounded when team supervision is performed in a prearranged segmentation. The chapter presents the stories and advice which give examples of how segmented mode supervision might work. There are many variables, and this mode suits some students and their research projects very well. The initial or early supervision meetings are an opportunity, recommended by most doctoral studies advice literature, to discuss the logistics of meetings and to clarify expectations for all parties. Annette’s supervision experience was satisfactory, but the discord between her supervisors was an irritation she could have done without. Annette attributes her capacity to disengage from the dispute between her supervisors to her experience working in industry and her maturity.
