ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 is an exploration of the praxis and ethos of urban designers in Santiago, aiming to unveil their own concerns, contradictions, and convictions about their disciplinary involvement under the neoliberal regime. Most of this chapter is built upon a set of interviews and a survey of urban design practitioners. It also provides a third approach to analyse urban design under neoliberalism, by tackling its ethics. To do so, I interviewed Santiago’s urban designers to hear them speaking about the contradictions that they see in their practice. From these interviews, it was possible to reveal their self-criticism and find concrete revolutionary possibilities towards transforming this disciplinary field, starting with a critical understanding of urban design in Santiago.
