ABSTRACT
The introduction outlines the rationale of the research project, such as the confusion of the scholarly community as well as the World Bank on the rule of law in China. The two central topics of the book, Chinese legal culture and the country’s constitutional order, are introduced while defining the key characteristics of Chinese legal culture: pragmatism, instrumentalism, statism, and favoritism. This chapter lays out the format of the book as well.
