This textbook is about the principle of digital computer design. The term “digital” is a characterization of data in a set. We say a set of data is digital if it contains a finite set of elements. Examples of digital data are the sets {0, 1}, {on, off}, {red, blue, green}, and {x: x is a decimal digit}. In each of the examples, the set of data is digital since the number of elements in the set is finite.
