ABSTRACT
Concerning the origin of steroids in the nervous system, two possibilities have to be considered:
(1) Diffusion of steroids synthesized in peripheral steroidogenic tissues, such as the gonads and adrenals, across the blood-brain barrier; and
(2) De novo steroid biosynthesis within the nervous system itself.
